WHAT IS DEFINITION OF DEPRESSION?
INTRODUCTION
Well, this is one of the most common questions people feel all around the world. In concern of one's mental health status. It is difficult to put all the criteria information and signs of depression in one blog. So the more you read, the more you will get! And information about mental health issues is a very unspecific subject. There is no hard and fast explanation. There is no specific measurement to know if someone has depression. It's all variable from person to person. But there is some most common explanation we tried to collect. And here is an easy definition of depression according to the World Health Organization (WHO) and an easy explanation of depression for you:
DEFINITION OF DEPRESSION
World Health Organization (WHO) and some other health websites and organizations explain definitions of depression in some research papers. Definition of depression according to WHO is: Depression is a common mental disorder that presents with depressed mood, loss of interest or pleasure, decreased energy, feelings of guilt or low self-worth, disturbed sleep or appetite, and aversion to activity. But such definitions sound a bit complicated to understand and confusing. By summering some definitions, an easy definition of depression: Depression is the long-lasting version of sadness that happens due to no valid reason to be sad, which reflects in other aspects of one's physical, emotional and social life!
WHAT MAKES DEPRESSION DIFFERENT FROM SADNESS
There are so many such things, we just have been listening from here and there, and keep believing without any analysis and understanding. We generally have huge misconceptions about such sensitive concepts. Such misconceptions create confusion in our mind "what is depression?", "what are the most common causes of depression?" exactly! But after my experience, there are some things I realized:
We cry over lots of things, lots of times. But it's different. It's alright. So many people think crying, feeling unhappy about a particular incidence is a sign of mental illness. No, probably it's not! Since we are humans, we are emotional, a bit sentimental about our family, love life, dreams, and so on! That's fine! Depression has no specific reason to come in. I remember, in engineering college, it was almost going well, I was scoring well, I had made a couple of friends, but still, I was so unenthusiastic. I had a constant feeling of missing something, missing myself. Even though everything was going normal, still I was feeling nothing is going well!
As I said, crying over something it's alright! If the sadness is limited to a particular incidence, then it's not a depression. If it is going beyond that then it can be! Every trauma has a specific duration to effect which varies from person to person. Many people had gone through heartbreaks and academic failures before as well, but it never affects that harshly. People feel the difference. The sadness which lasts for a longer time than your previous experiences, then it can be depression!
Sadness fades away with time. As time flies, sadness decreases. Depression has an increasing pattern. It grows with time. In my story, I was trying to overcome it every morning and I was sleeping helplessly every night. The more you try to control it, the more it gonna go out of control. It is like a labyrinth. It feels like you are more and more drowning in your thoughts! And this continues till your thoughts get any way to come out!
